How to find your handball agent: 3 keys for young players

Introduction

In the professional handball world, there are many key figures: clubs, presidents, coaches, sponsors… and in the middle of it all, connecting the dots between them and the players, are the agents. The main role of the agent is to be the intermediary between the clubs and the players. But an agent can be so much more, especially for young players. A good agent becomes a constant presence throughout a player’s career, through the highs and the lows. The agent is not just there to find deals, but to give advice, keep players grounded and make sure their talent translates into long-term success.

Here are 3 keys for every young players on how to look for an agent:

” The agent is not just there to find deals, but to give advice, keep players grounded and make sure their talent translates into long-term success.”.

A. Talk to the pros around you

Go through your teammates and your network. Speak with experienced players and trusted people to learn about their agents, how their relationships work, and see if it could be a good fit for you. Don’t hesitate to speak with multiple agents to learn more about their way of working and of course to see if they’d be interested in working with you.

B. Be aligned with your agent

There’s no absolute “good” or “bad” agent (though, some may not be so great…). What matters is finding the right fit. Not every agent will be a good match for every player, and the same goes the other way around. It’s crucial that you feel aligned with your agent, that you share the same values and, most importantly, trust them. You’re giving this person the authority to represent you and speak on your behalf to clubs, so this is not a decision to be made lightly. An agent is someone you should feel comfortable reaching out to at anytime, knowing they’ll always have your back.

C. Do not wait until you really need it

I often hear “I have still 2 years of contract, I don’t need an agent”. In my opinion, it’s precisely the best moment to look for an agent, because there is no state of emergency. This period allows you to build a relationship with your agent and work together to create a plan and set goals for the future. Becoming a professional player and aiming for the highest level requires preparation and anticipation. If you’re looking for an agent two months before your contract ends because you weren’t renewed, you’re not maximizing your career potential. It’s never too early to have an agent. That way, when challenges arise, you’re ready to face them because you’ve already prepared.

Conclusion

In conclusion, finding the right agent is a key step in a young player’s journey to success. It’s not just about securing a contract, but about building a long-term partnership that will guide you through the ups and downs of your career. By speaking to the pros around you, ensuring alignment with your agent, and preparing ahead of time, you’ll create a solid foundation for a more focused and successful career. Remember, it’s never too early to start building these connections. The earlier you plan, the better prepared you’ll be to handle whatever challenges come your way. Prepare the future, take your career into your hands. Anticipate. Find someone you have complete confidence in, someone capable of guiding you to the next level.
